Of Memory, Place, and Residue, 2026

How does a place endure after displacement, remaining in the muscles, a remembered room, or a voice that cannot fully release what it has witnessed? Of Memory, Place, and Residue approaches memory through the physical and emotional weight of what remains. Houses, interrupted maps, and an unfinished red body occupy a space where shelter and return are still in question. Echoes of victims’ testimonies from Nepal’s Civil War enter this space alongside rice, salt, and stone, materials that can hold an offering, an act of care, or the pressure of a history carried forward. My work examines how violence persists after the visible event has passed, becoming part of how people inhabit their homes and move through the world. Continuing the themes of Nepali Sublime: Body in Translation, these works bring language into closer contact with matter. A house may protect while also pressing upon the body; a map may preserve a feeling of return without showing a way back. My work stays with these unresolved relationships, allowing testimony and ordinary materials to hold the difficulty of remembering a place that continues to live within us.
